Unity Software Challenges App Store Dominance with New Payment Tool
Unity Software Inc. has introduced a payments solution enabling game developers to circumvent Apple and Google's app store fees. The San Francisco-based company, whose engine powers a majority of mobile games, launched the free product on October 22. It allows integration of third-party payment providers across platforms, sidestepping Apple's App Store and Google Play billing systems.
The MOVE follows legal rulings forcing tech giants to permit alternative payment channels. Unity CEO Matt Bromberg emphasized the potential for increased profitability and creative freedom for developers. The company aims to capture a slice of the $120 billion global in-app purchase market, heavily driven by mobile gaming.
